How to Disable the “Good News, HDR Screen Detected” Notification

If you’ve recently upgraded your setup with an HDR (High Dynamic Range) monitor, you may have noticed an annoying notification popping up every time you turn on your monitor: “Good news, HDR screen detected.” While this message is intended to inform you that your system is ready to take advantage of your monitor’s enhanced capabilities, it can become highly repetitive and distracting. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this notification from appearing each time your monitor starts. Here’s how you can do it.

Adjusting Display Settings

The first step in mitigating the HDR notification is to check your display settings. Often, these notifications occur because Windows automatically detects an HDR-capable display.

  1. Right-click on the desktop and select Display settings.
  2. Scroll down to the Windows HD Color section.
  3. If Play HDR games and apps is toggled on, try turning it off. This does not disable HDR usage for your entire system but can stop the specific notifications associated with its detection.

Disabling Notifications via Settings

If altering the display settings does not fully eliminate the notification, you can also manage notifications more broadly in Windows.

  1. Open Settings by clicking the gear icon in the Start menu or pressing Windows key + I.
  2. Go to System and then select Notifications & actions.
  3. Scroll down to find the section labeled Get notifications from these senders. Look for your display adapter (usually named after your graphics card or monitor).
  4. Turn off notifications from this sender. This will prevent specific alerts relating to your monitor from appearing on your desktop.

Using the Registry Editor (Advanced)

For those comfortable navigating the Windows Registry, there’s a more advanced option to disable the HDR notifications entirely. Keep in mind that you should back up your registry before making changes, as incorrect edits can lead to system instability.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, then type regedit and press Enter.
  2. Navigate to the following path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Notifications\Settings
  3. Look for a value associated with HDR notifications (it may vary based on your graphics driver).
  • If the value doesn’t exist, you may need to create it. Right-click in the right pane, select New > DWORD (32-bit) Value, and name it something like NoHDRNotifications. Set the value to 1 to disable it.
  1. Restart your computer to apply the changes.

Monitoring Event Viewer

It’s worth noting that these notifications may also register entries in the Event Viewer. If you find yourself browsing this tool frequently and want to avoid seeing related entries, you can create a filter:

  1. Open the Event Viewer by searching for it in the Start menu.
  2. In the left pane, expand Windows Logs and select System.
  3. Click on Filter Current Log in the right Actions pane.
  4. In the window that appears, you can set a filter to hide entries related to HDR notifications.

By following these steps, you should be able to silence the “Good news, HDR screen detected” message on your monitor and enhance your viewing experience. Whether using basic display settings adjustments or diving into registry settings, you have several effective methods to control notifications and make your computing environment more enjoyable.
